Bard Solo Power PICC vs. MedComp

Has anyone switched to the new Bard Solo Power Piccs?  We currently use the groshong and the purple power piccs with the positive pressure valve.  I am moving toward the solo power picc since we are a heparin free facility but have also had some of my IV nurses suggest a trial of the medComp product.  Any comparisons out there?

Kevin, If you are currently

Kevin,

If you are currently using a valve on the end of your power PICCs then you have a valved PICC. I am finding it hard to pay the additional cost of the SOLO when I already have a valved PICC. Also if something goes wrong with my current valves I can change the valve. If something goes wrong with the SOLO valve, you will have to exchange the entire PICC.

The solo picc is fairly new

The solo picc is fairly new to the market, do have data that suggests a problem with the vlaves?

Eric the only thing I have to say you must be using one of the four needleless systems that is heparin free in accordance with market approval to say so from the FDA.  There are only 4/14 that are approved to date.  You may feel your needleless system acts like a valve however the patient does not have a valved catheter when they leave your institution.  There are only three PICC lines that are valved on the market.  The original Groshong, PasV not owned by Avista, and PoserPICC Solo.  When the patient leaves your premises they do not have a valved PICC line.

We are currently doing a trial on the Solo PICCs (dual lumen) and we have not had any problems yet.  Unlike the POWER PICCs, the SOLO is saline flush only and have valves.
