From the first use of CHG as the gold standard for CVC site care I was instructed to clean the skin first with alcohol to remove old glue residue and any other contaminates on the skin before appling the CHG--This practice has been reinforced in conversations with other vascular practitioners--INS standard #51 Catheter Site Care makes no mention of this practice--Is there another source I can quote as I want to include this language in hospital CVC policy--Thank you in Advance for your remarksÂ
CDC Guidelines state to apply antiseptics to clean skin. Before a puncture is made, you can wash the skin with regular soap and water. For dressing changes, the best method for cleaning the skin is to use alcohol before the CHG to remove excess skin oils, tape residue, dried blood, etc. Lynn
