Implanted ports and TPN

Outpatiet is to receive cyclic TPN through implanted port. Pt. and wife are leary about accessing port every day. Is it safe to leave port accessed with Huber needle and extension tubing and just cap off tubing when done with TPN( like a hepwell).Â Thanks in advance.

We have 3 home parenteral

We have 3 home parenteral nutrition patients who leave the access needle insitu x 7 d. They also connect/disconnect & perform self-flushes & heparinize their line daily. Homecare nurses are presently changing the access needle & dsg on a weekly basis.

This is not the best

This is not the best catheter for any type of continuous infusion but it can be done. The risk of infiltration and extravasation from a displaced port access needle is significant. So you must use some type of needle stabilization device and do a thorough job of teaching the patient and family about activities, assessing the integrity of this needle to make sure it is still within the port body and what to do if it is not.
