discontinuing central catheters

Hello everyone,

Â Â What is your standard of practice for discontinuing central venous catheters on mechanically ventilated patients or others who are unble to cooperate and perform valsalva?

Â Â Â During whichÂ phase of ventilation do you retract the catheter?

On expiration with the head

On expiration with the head as low as possible for the patient to tolerate. Be prepared to quickly cover the site and then use an ointment based gauze to seal it off. Lynn
