extension set

What is the correct procedure for adding an extension set to an IV that is already infusing for a patient having a MRI done?

Thank you,

Deb

What is infusing and can it

What is infusing and can it be stopped during the MRI? If not, start a new PIVC. If fluids can be stopped, you can disconnect from the existing extension set, add a needleless connector, flush and send to Rad. If there is no extension set then prime the new extension set and needleless connector while keeping both ends sterile. Detach the infusing set, cap it with a sterile dead end cap, then attach the new primed extension and sent to Rad.

Thank you, Lynn.  The

Thank you, Lynn.  The scenario is how do you correctly add/prime the extension set.  Do you prime the extension set by putting the rate way up on the pump to prime or do you prime the IV pump set by priming the set before you put it in the pump?

Never prime any set or tubing

Never prime any set or tubing by increasing the rate on the pump. Far too great a risk of a serious med error when the pump setting is forgotten. Follow the pump manufacturer IFU for priming. Each pump may have different methods.
