The "Vascular Access Team" at my hospital has taken over tunneled catheter repair. We took this from a pediatric CNS and were taught that a catheter could only be repaired twice? I can not find any recommendatoin from our manufacturer or published evidence. If there is enough external catheter to repair can a catheter be repaired more than twice?
Shannon Reese, RN, VA-BC
Bear in mind that catheter damage and the repair carries infection risk. Also please read the INS SOP on Catheter Damage in the Complicaiton section. There is no restriction to a number of times for a repair, however all repairs require a risk vs benefit analysis. Surgical ANTT is required for the procedure. More information found in that INS SOP.
