Inserting lines in IJ, axillary, and femoral (mid thigh) veins

Hello,

I have been inserting PICCs for the past 12 years but there is an increasing need to use sites other than the upper arms.  Can anyone please tell me where I can receive formal hands on training to insert lines via the IJ, axillary and femoral veins?  Our nephrologists are really pushing for this.

Thank you.

I only know of educational

I only know of educational courses from Teleflex for these sites. You will need to document competency so you may have to create your own program and work with an supporting MD to precept insertions.

Thank you.  Bard has a CVC

Thank you.  Bard has a CVC training program online for the insertion of the Power Hohn Catheter but I don't think they offer clinical competency.  So do you think I can create my own program (including competencies) if I complete this course and have a physician/surgeon mentor me for several insertions?

Competency has 3 components -

Competency has 3 components - knowledge acquisition which comes from the training program, repetitive practice in a simulation lab until you have master the procedure, and last supervised practice until you have met the requirements of your facility and documented this on a skills checklist or global rating scale. Contact your staff development dept for assistance with this process. This is more than just having someone watch you do X number of insertions. There is no magic number to insert to equal competency, everyone is different. Good luck
