I am looking for a reference to bring to policy and procedure forum. My hospital and surrounding Boston hospitals all keep and desinate a sterile route for initating tpn. This does require a line change if a patient has a cental line/picc already that has been contaminated.
In discussion is that the staff will be directed that a CL can be used for tpn if the line has not rec`d a blood product.
I would like literature to support the "NO" infusion of tpn if a line is not optimal ie been saved for tpn use. There is of course the occlusion if the pt is not stable for the line change procedure. SO does the policy stick with no if there has been blood products or liberalize to infusing tpn through any violated port?
I support the practice guidelines of area hospitals, however I would like evidence based literature to present to keep these patients infection free. THANKS
