Foam disc dressing impregnated with silver and PHMB. Tissue adhesives also have good evidence about being microbicidal. None of these make a claim about CLABSI rate reduction yet. But they are supported by studies.
There is a product which your hospital already uses which seals the site, not only stopping bleeding and oozing but creates a hostile environment for microbes. There are supported studies that having it part of CL care has shown CLABSI reduction.
StatSeal is non-prescriptive, hypoallergenic, non-systemic and passed all FDA required biocompatibility testing. It does not contain CHG and has no age contraindications. It quickly forms a seal to stop the flow of blood and exudate. Comprised of a hydrophilic polymer and potassium ferrate, StatSeal works independently of the clotting cascade to form a seal. The mechanism of action is two step and occurs simultaneously to instantly form a low pH, hostile environment for microbes.
A NICU at a large academic medical center in the southwestern United States initiated a quality improvement project to effectively reduce CLABSI rates. By utilizing a dedicated PICC maintenance team and standardizing CLABSI bundles, which included the prophylactic use of StatSeal in the dressing change protocol, the NICU was able to decrease the CLABSI rate by 92%, equaling a reduction of 7 CLABSI infections over 3 years.
Similarly, Children's Hospital and Medical Center of Omaha did a quality improvement initiative and presented a poster showing similar results at the NICU Leadership conference in 2017.
