I am inquiring if there are limitations to Fr size and type of CVAD's, for drawing labs specimens with the BD Vacutainer placed directly on needleless connector. Our nurses work with pediatric patients in home care setting. I have been informed they are meant for "large bore" catheters only, but would like more clarification. Thank You!
For small size PICCs, a vaccum tube can temporarily collapse the catheter preventing the backflow of blood. This does not cause permanent catheter damage but it just means that the blood sample will need to be drawn manually. Use a small syringe and aspriate gently and slowly. Lynn
