In our facility we are having an issue with the hubs of CVLs cracking if our needleless connector cap is replaced frequently or is screwed on too tightly. This is leading to replacement of CVLs to reduce leaking and risk of infection. One of the RNs offered a solution by attaching extension tubing onto the CVL hub and if the connection cracks, it’s on the extension tubing (which can be easily replaced), not on the CVL hub. I wanted to find out if this practice is acceptable or if there is possibly another solution other than trying not to cap the connection too tightly (which is practitioner dependent)? Thank you.
You would need to change the extension set also. So I don't think this would solve the problem. Are you cleaning the CVAD hub before attaching a new needleless connector? What disinfectant? The hub must be thoroughly dry before putting new one on. Is this happening? Alcohol can soften some types of plastics. Are you using Hemostats or clamps to remove NC? Contact Cath manufacturer for information. Work with their clinical team to find the cause of the cracking problem. Lynn
