I was hoping someone might be able to explain something to me, or point me in the right direction to find the answer. I have always been told that placing IVs in the EJ should only be done as a last resort and that those IVs should be removed as soon as possible. What I cannot find is the rationale. Aside from being unstable due to location, what is the reason for this? I would appreciate any information you can give me. Thank you.

EJ IV
The pathway of the EJ very tortuose for a short peripheral catheter. Neck movement adds to the risk of infiltration/extravasation. It is very difficult to stablize a catheter in this location. Lynn
