I know at my previous place of employment we had to prove our own reliability to our doctors. I think as a team we placed 50 PICCs and compared with CXR readings and got very good results. If I remember correctly there were 2 that came into question. A Bard RN came in for our trial. We were learning to use 3CG at the same time we were establishing no need for CXR and to only have 2 with a question was good. I think if you want your MDs buy in you'll need to prove to them that you are proficient at placing your PICCs in the proper position. Studies aren't going to convince them entirely. I bet if you asked your rep they could give you contacts at other hospitals who have proven success that you could use to back your request. At my current place of employment we only had to get CXRs on 14% of our PICC placements in 2014. I'll go back and look at the ICU patients to see if they have CXRs taken at some point after placement just to check and they are distal SVC to CAJ. So I know we are still doing right by our patients.
