We have had a question come up in our surigical department about the use of IV pumps for Pediatric patients to prevent fluid overload. Our anesthesia department does not routinely use IV pumps on any patients but some of the nurses are pushing for this and I have been designated to try and find evidence that they should be used. Could anyone help me out there with any evidience on this subject. I have not been able to find any so far.

Pediatrics is a very large group spanning from birth to at least 18 years. This means numerous body sizes and other risk factors for over or under hydration. So you will need to look at the specific risk factors for each age group separately - neonate, infant, toddler, preschool, school age, and adolescent. Then add the risk for their primary and secondary medical diagnoses. I can not direct you to any specific published article that discusses the risk or research based on these factors. The chapter on Infusion Therapy in Children from the INS textbook is a good place to start. Lynn
