Why would you ever need to do this? Use of ultrasound and/or infrared light devices greatly enhance the ability to locate appropriate peripheral sites. If these are not available, there are more preferable sites than the scalp for adults such as EJ and IJ. Instead of looking only for contraindications, I would be seeking information about the safety of this procedure in adults. It is not the best choice for infants and these veins in adults are not prominent. So I don't think this would ever be appropriate. Hair must be shaved, sites are difficult to secure, infiltration is common, and arteries are very close. INS textbook states that scalp veins may be used up to about 18 months of age when hair follicles mature and epidermis toughens. Lynn
Thanks so much for your feedback. Yes, of course, it is the safety of this that we are most concerned with. Common sense suggests what you confirmed, we just needed a credible source! Much appreciated!
