Looks like this topic has been posted before, with not a clear cut answer. If the INS scale is for 18 yrs and older, what is used for peds (range from adult size to infant). Is there a scale that INS endorses for pediatrics?
Thanks,
Kristi Selck, RN
At the time of the writing of the 2011 INS standards, what is included is all that could be found. I am not familiar with what has been published, if anything, since that time. Lynn

Does anyone have pediatric infiltration/extravasation and phlebitis scales that they are using? Could you please share them or other references you may have related to these?
I am also wondering how these are linked to the electronic documentation. Do you differentiate all vascular access devices between adult, pediatric, and neonatal?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you
See 2016 INS Standard 46, page S101 Practice Criteria L and the corresponding references. A pediatric scale referenced there is the only infiltration scale that has been tested for validity and reliabiity. Lynn

After much research and networking we instituted a new guideline that was modeled after the work done by Dallas Children's and Cinn. Children's. We have dropped our rate from over 6% to 2.8% since September. The success is related to the support of our nursing administration for mandatory education program set up. our biggest challenge has been provider by in and follow up especially in the NICU which has our highest rates. Our PCCU received recognition from the hospital board for decreasing their rate. A big shout out to Cinn. Children's Vascular Access Team and supports. They were instrumental in helping us build our medical record flowsheets (Epic)
Thank you! I would be very interested in hearing more if you would share, especially building the EMR flowsheets. We are using Epic as well.
