Placing PICCs (or mids) with chemo running?

Dear list friends,

Occationally we get referrals to place a PICC (or mid) in a patient already receiving chemotherapy through a PIV . We have done it, but then thought that it might be hazardous to us, as the blood coming out during insertion will contain the chemotherapeutic drug and we will inhale it. Thus we have stopped accepting these referrals.

Is this a real hazard or should we start placing them again?

Inhaling is not the issue -
Inhaling is not the issue - contact with any blood or body fluid is the issue. This is covered in the ONS guidelines for safe handling of blood and body fluids after chemotherapy. Lynn
