Can anyone possibly provide me with recommendations regarding the return of the "waste blood" sample to the patient after drawing blood specimens from central lines? I have been looking for the latest research regarding this practice and any relationship to increased risk of micro-embolishms. I would appreciate any insight & references you might have.

Waste blood should never be returned to the patient. Clots and infection are the risks with such practices. You can use the mixing method if you are concerned about loss of blood volume. Read this article:
