TPN and blood draws
Pt. has Bard power Picc, double lumen.  One port has TPN infusing and the other port is occluded.  Stat labs are ordered.  Is it O.K. to draw labs from TPN port if proper protocol is used?  Turning off drip for several minutes, flushing, waste, sample, reflush with 20cc N.S.

If you are asking if it is sound practice from an Infection Control point of veiw, I think you know the answer is NO.

If you are asking about the validity of the blood tests results, the answer is YES.

Why not declot the occluded port?

I agree with Rivka. Why has the occluded lumen not been addressed leaving you in this situation in the first place? Lynn

Occluded port was declotted
Occluded port was declotted several hours later...however, stat labs needed to be done and the question was should we try a peripheral stick or use the TPN port.  Can labs be effected by drawing from this port.

Depends upon what labs you
Depends upon what labs you were drawing. I would not want to draw chemistries for electrolytes and glucose through a lumen that is receiving TPN. A peripheral stick would be the best choice for accurate lab data. Lynn
