Is there evidence to show that connecting a NC directly to the catheter hub is not best practice? Our peds department wants to do this so the loop of the extension tubing doesn't get caught on things. My recommendation was to secure the tubing with tegaderm but now they want evidence. they plan to do a trial.
There is no such evidence that I have ever found. In my experience, I would always place and extenion set on a PIVC for many reasons. In peds, the site and the tubing loop can be protected by a simple sock with the toes cut out or tubular mesh dressing.
