I am working on a project at my facility to increase the use of Curos caps to include all Vascular Access devices rather than just patients with central lines. The question has come up that if we do this can we eliminate the need for administration set changes when a PICC is placed since the line has been equivalent to a central line. Is there any evidence to support this?
NO, definitely no evidence for this. You could extend the use of each set for 7 days for all PIVC and CVADs though as there is evidence for that. But change frequency and management should be the same regardless of the type of VAD it is attached to. And make sure that the continuous set is never disconnected from the VAD until it is time to change it. NO disconnection for ambulation, toiletting, etc. Bag, pole, etc needs to go with patient.

I think I need to clarify. We change out administration sets at 7 days. But, if a patient has a PICC placed it is our practice to change the administration set that was attached to the peripheral to a new administration for the newly placed PICC or other type of central line. My question is if the administration set is cared for the same as central line do we need to change all the administration sets?
Well I still may not understand your question. New catheter always means new set as recommended in the SOP
