Who removes the PICC line with documented clot? Do the trained nurses remove these lines in this situation? Does a doctor have to be present at the bedside?
Any nurse removing any CVC, including PICCs, should anticipate and be able to immediately manage a patient who presents signs and symptoms of any type of emboli - air, catheter or thrombus. The majority of CVCs have silent thrombosis. so it does not matter whether you know the clot is present or not, the risk is still present.
