Have a question for the experts. A PICC nurse that I have known for years is about to retire and the have a RCIS that places PICC's in their facility. Is it acceptable for the RCIS (Registered Cardio-ivasive Sepcialist) to train RN's to place PICC's. She is not an RN and there are questions as to whether or not is acceptable. Hopefully someone knows the answer. Good luck trying to get a straight answer from the Board of Nursing.
Thank you, Warren Willard.
PS if you haven't taken the new Midline course from Hadaway & Associates, you need to take it. Wonderful program!
Thanks Warren. I appreciate the course evaluation. Folr learning PICC insertion, the process begins with an educational piece delivered in a classroom or by online courses. Then you move on to deliberate practice in a simulation setting and then to supervised clinical practice. I am not sure of the educational background of the RCIS you are talking about or how they learned to place PICCs. I think this RCIS could be the preceptor in the lab and/or bedside, but I don't think this person can or should be responsible for teaching the entire learning process from start to finish.
