PICC Insertion

What is everyone doing? Also is there any research to support two PICC RN insertion teams? So where I work, we utilize two PICC RNs to place a PICC. This is very beneficial. After two attempts by first RN, the second RN can attempt. The second RN assists in trouble shotting when PICC placement is difficult, get additional supplies if needed and observe to maintain a sterile insertion. Without the second, the insertion success rate would drop and an increase in cost of supplies for a second RN to redo the procedure.

There are no studies

There are no studies supporting the need for a 2 person PICC insertion. Many faciltiies have collected data internal to their organization and shown that 1 inserter and an assistant is beneficial from a productive standpoint. This 2 person team can get more insertions done than a single person acting alone. The only support for an assistant is for someone to observe the procedure, complete the insertion checklist and stop the procedure if there is any breach of technique. This extra person can easily be an unlicensed assistant with very specific training. They also assist by positioning patient, setting up the sterile fleld, addressing any patient needs during the procedure, and clean up. When you are just beginning to insert PICCs, I can understand the feeling for wanting another inserter to do each procedure. This need should decrease over time and with experience.
