An interventional radiologist is trying to bring PICC insertion under IR. He said the enterprise can make money, but not the hospital. Would it still be more costly when you consider having to have a rad tech, and the use of an IR room? Any comments?
Absolutely, it is more costly. Plus it ties up an IR room that can be used for other procedures. It limits PICC availability to some patients who can not be transported to IR - vents, etc. The professional fee reimbursed to the doc is very low, so I don't think this doc has really looked at all the true cost.
