Icons on the right side of the Bard SiteRite 6

I understand the catheter size (FR) and vessel diameter (mm) icons on the right side of Bard's SR 6 are to assisst us determine the appropriate catheter size for the vessel. Does anyone know where that information came from? How were these figures determined. I've read this question here before but I don't recall a straight answer. I already know the "smallest catheter should be used" rule but where the heck did those numbers come from.  Do I have to hunt down one of their engineeers? if this is just a math question then I'm really in trouble. Any thoughts plzzzz. A little help.......Thx!

Use of ultrasound allowed us

Use of ultrasound allowed us to measure vein diameter for the first time. Then a mathematical calculation was published about vein diameter and catheter size. Then one clinical study showing the catheteter show fill no more than 45% of the vein lumen.
