We have been told that our facility will not be paying/reimbursing employees for conferences this year. If we want to attend we will have to foot the bill and use our vacation time.Â
Last year the hospital paid for two staff members AVA conference registration, airfare, and they were given educational pay for their scheduled work-time. Staff had to pay for their own meals, hotel, etc.
Have you been impacted by education cuts?
Last week, I was at the Nursing2009 Symposium where I heard that the majority of those attending paid for their own expenses. I think it is a nasty outcome of the current economy. But when you pay for it yourself, you are more in control of what you go to and direct your own professional development rather than having your employer dictate what you can and can not go to. Also, remember that all expenses are tax deductible, although that is little compensation I know.

Our facility in Denver has cut back as well. We can now only have travel, hotel and registration fee's partially paid IF we agree to give a formal inservice to the nursing staff on what we learned at the conference.

I am scared to say this with the previous postings, but we still have the support for our PICC RNs. I don't want our folks to take back our budget allotment!!!!
