drawing blood cultures from CVAD

When drawing bl. cx from CVAD is changing cap and drawing through new cap preferred over hub to hub?? Does anyone flush first with a small amount of NS and then pull back to check patency prior to culture?? or just use a 10cc empty syringe to aspirate culture. Thanks very much for your input. Sue

 The evidence points to not

The evidence points to not drawing a blood culture through a used needleless connector. There is no evidence regarding drawing hub-to-hub or through a new NC. That decision would be made by your facility and put in your policy and procedure so that all nurses are doing it the same way. Draw the first amount of blood and send that for culture, no discard, no flushing. You want to capture what is inside that lumen. Lynn
