informed consent

With the evolving standards of care, who is responsible for getting consent form for picc lines, the physician or picc nurse?

Unless there is a specific

Unless there is a specific state law directing the exact type of professional to obtain informed consent, this entire process is the responsibility of the person actually performing the procedure. A physician who does not perform this procedure is not nearly as well qualified to do all the necessary education and validation of understanding as the person actually doing it. And informed consent is an entire process of education that includes all aspects of the procedure, risk, benefits, alternatives, etc. The signature on a piece of paper is just the final step at the end of this process. This is not new due to "evolving standards". Since 1981, I have never placed a PICC where I did not educate and obtain this informed consent. Lynn
