I was instructing some nurses yesterday on proper central line care and maintenance. One of the nurses works at a hospital that states their P&Ps were developed with Evidence Based Practices in mind. The P&Ps for central lines are "no masks and just clean gloves" not sterile gloves. Has any one else heard of these practices?

I would have to ask what evidence they are using? In addition, they still should be within an accepatable standard of care. We remove the old dressing with non-sterile gloves and a mask..then we re-apply using sterile gloves and a sterile dressing change kit..stat loc and biopatch..ect.maybe they are thinking about clean wound care and NOT a central line site....I would never dress a cental line site using clean technique!!!!!
I did ask that question but unfortunately the nurse only knows what she was told about the P&Ps. She did say the central line kits are put together at the hospital to perform these procedures as I discribed. We also use clean gloves and mask when removing the old dressing. Thanks for your input.

The evidence is the CDC guideline. They do not state masks are required for dressing changes. They also state that clean or sterile gloves may be used for dressing changes. Lynn
