We do on occasion have patients that this practice would benefit; however, would like information from all who have adopted or trialed this practice before we initiate at our hospital. Was it a valued practice with positive outcomes? How long have you used this procedure? etc. Please help. Thanks
INS Standard 66 II B - Blood Sampling via Vascular Access Device states that “Peripheral catheters should only be used for phlebotomy at the time of device insertion. The exception is short-term use, ie, anticipated need less than 48 hours, in which case the peripheral-short catheter should be used only for blood withdrawal, not for infusion of fluids or medications.”

yes, I am well aware that this is a recommended standard, I am wanting personal/professional experiences before we implement in our hospital.

We do this successfully in our pediatric patient population using a 24 or 22 ga catheter for diagnostic tests or studies of less than 24 hour duration.
how long have you been doing this?

decades.
Could you please provide me your procedure? Do you apply a tourniquet? Waste? Syringe size? Flush? Average cath dwell time? Sorry for so many questions. I just hate reinventing wheel if someone else has perfected it. I really appreciate all of your help.
