I was wondering what other facilities are practicing in regards to the administration of chemo. Do you use a stopcock in your line? Also, does anyone have any supporting documentation either for or against the use of stopcocks when administering chemo?
To safely prepare and administer all chemotherapy drugs, you need a closed system drug transfer device. Stopcocks do not fall into this category. These devices prevent aerosolizing of the drug when you make or break connections in the tubing, thus preventing the nurse from contact with the hazardous drug. NIOSH and ASHP have statements about these devices. But stopcocks should not be used as they do not accomplish this purpose and increase the risk of catheter related infections. Lynn
