Dialysis catheter blood cultures by a non-dialysis nurse.
We have a dialysis nurse in our facility 3 days a week. If the patient spikes a fever, the doctor orders blood cultures via the dialysis line. Since the dialysis nurse is frequently not in, the nurses draw the blood via our policy using the exact method a dialysis nurse would and re-heparinize the line. Does anyone know of any other way in which this should be handled?

Sounds good to me as long as

Sounds good to me as long as those staff nurses have a documented competency with this procedure. I think it would be better if left in the hands of infusion specialist though.
