maintaining competency

I am training a couple of PICC nurses without prior experience.  Problem is that it is just for per diem and expected to have limited hours. How often do you think one needs to perform placements in order to maintain competency (in terms of abiility and standards) considering they are beginners.

I assume they are training on ultrasound.  As the learning curve is 50 insertions it is doubtful that they will get thru training with limited hours.  As far as competency a year there is no magic number but I cannot imagine that less than 50 per year or 4 per month would not be a minimum criteria.  Ultrasound it not easy to just pick up and become competent overnight.
