Skin antisepsis for ETOH levels
What are your facilities using for skin antisepsis in patients that are allergic to iodine/betadine (and can't use IPA because of court related issues)?

We would use 2%

We would use 2% Chlorhexidine swabsticks, alcohol free.

All chlorhexidine gluconate

All chlorhexidine gluconate products for skin antisepsis at a venipuncture site available in the US have 70% isopropyl alcohol in them. The only aqueous CHG are products such as Hibiclens, a 4% solution in a pour bottle, not a swabstick at all, only labeled indication is for handwashing.

Hibiclens was one of my

Hibiclens was one of my suggestions, knowing it was off label.  The ED won't use any disinfectant with IPA in it for venipuncture lab sampling for ETOH levels.  They know it's a different form of alcohol, but they say it's still an issue in court.
