Currently, my IV team and the surgical PA's are the only staff competent to remove PICC lines. However, the IV Team has been downsized and no longer cover the house 24/7. Do other facilities have RN's other than IV Team members D/C PICC lines? Thank you for your feedback
Our floor nurses do. If you plan to implement this in your institution, you should plan for a massive education effort and and ongoing one at that.

On our PICC cart we keep a PICC Removal competency check form. When a RN calls us to remove a PICC we teach her how to do it, going through the form, sign it, give it the the manager for the nurse's personal file and that verifies the she is now competent to remove a PICC.
At this point on every nursing unit we have at least 3 RN who can remove PICC and since the last step on the form we pass them on is to report to us every PICC removal, they leave us a message on the lines they remove, which in turns helps us keep track of our line removals.
Documented competency is the key to this procedure by nurses other than PICC-RNs.
