Nurses training for picc tip verification in Florida

Hello there from sunny Okeechobee, Florida.

I am interested in obtaining training on assessing/reading chest xrays for picc tip determination.  Anyone out there that has already explored this in the state of Florida?

Is anyone aware of how I would even begin to look for training on this?

I have done internet searches and only find topics of discussion not courses offered.  I did look at AVA and their position statement; it sounds like they recommend the Radiologist training me.   We just got a new radiologist;  he doesnt even want to look at my picc line xrays ;  he says they are not stat and there fore will get read when they get read.......I should be reading them...... dont need xrays, just as long as get blood back.....etc....etc... ( so I am thinking him training me wont be too easy), he might do it just to get me off his back!

I discussed the issue of training and competency that is needed on this, so now I am eager to do so to expedite use of the picc lines I place.

Does anyone have any help for me on this?  I will take sample policies, info on training and infor on State Board in Florida.

P.S.S.  I am also interested in any advanced ultrasound assessment training;  you know vein health, diameter, thrombus etc...

I did find one course avail from PICC excellence but it was only like 3-4 ceus (dvd) and a couple of hundred dollars.

Thank you in advance!  Gina Ward R.N., C.P.A.N

Hi Gina, My company is

Hi Gina, My company is working on an online continuing education course on radiographic assessment for nurses. This is taking much longer than I anticipated because we are having difficulty finding enough xrays of PICCs to both put in the course and to use for the post-test.

If anyone has files they are willing to share, that would be wonderful. If you do, we would offer compensation in the form of free registration for the online course. Of course this would be xrays without any form of patient identification and with complete permission from your facility.

After taking this course you would receive a certificate of completion. Then you could work with a radiologist to document your competency. We will include a form to use for this competency documentation. So we are still working on this but I never anticipated it taking so long. Thanks for your interest.
