What is your policy for delivering IV insulin? do you use special tubing?  Do you flush the line with 50mL's prior to starting the infusion? or just infuse it through standard tubing. Â

One of the physicians I work with said that you should flush the line with at least 50 ml prior to starting the infusion. Rationale: insulin adheres to the inside of the tubing, so flushing it first allows for the patient to get the right amount initially instead of hours later.
