LENGTH OF TIME POST ARTERIAL LINE REMOVAL BEFORE PICC INSERTION IN SAME ARM.
DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY RESEARCH INFO OR RULES OF THUMB RE: AMOUNT OF TIME POST ARTERIAL LINE REMOVAL ONE SHOULD WAIT BEFORE INSERTING A PICC IN THE SAME ARM?

I don't know if there is

I don't know if there is literature about it. But since in the peripheral the veins and the arteries take different paths, I do not see any need to "wait", as long as the A-Line was removed correctly, pressure dressing applied and it is not bleeding. Have done it hundreds of time, never an issue.

Also, when limited, we put PICC on same arm as A-Line if the other arm is not available.

What is the rational for not placing a PICC in the same arm as an art-line?  Too much increase in risk due to possible circulatory compromise?

We actually have placed a picc in the same arm as an art line as long as it was radial but not brachial. We just try to limit time tourniquet is on the arm with insertion and assess that arterial circulation isn't impeded during the procedure. It has not been our experience with radial lines that circulation is compromised. Again, as a rule, we don't insert them in same arm as brachial art lines so i can't speak to that effect. Our question is, AFTER an art line has been removed, is there any ideal time frames that have been established to prevent arterial hemorrhaging or hematoma formation with all the manipulation of the arm, pressure from tourniquet, etc involved with picc insertions. I realize the answer to this question is highly variable, based on pt's coagulation times. However, we are looking for some "worst case scenario" time frames or general rules of practice that facilities are using in this situation.
