Can anyone tell me if non-licensed healthcare personel are placing picc lines? For example, are nursing assistant tech's being trained to place picc lines.
No, this would not be included in the legal scope of practice for any unlicensed assitive personnel. It is however within the legal scope for radiologic technologists and respiratory therapist in some states. There are far too many patient-specific decisions required during the procedure and this prohibit this procedure from being delegated from the RN to the UAP. See scope of practice standard from INS Standards of Pracitice. Lynn
I know for a fact there was a cath lab tech placing lines bedside in south Missouri. It made my head explode but the OR/Cath lab manager wanted it that way.
Cath lab tech may not be an unlicensed assistive person. Probably the same as radiology tech. They have AD or BS degree same as nurses. Professional certification same as nurses. ASRT supports their practice of PICC insertion. Lynn
That was not the case in this situation. The tech had zero clinical experience before working in this cath lab. This was not a good situation at all. Sometimes the absence of minimum requirements scare me.
