PICC Line Insertion Business
Can anyone give me some guidance on starting a PICC Line insertion business for hospitals?  Currently I work in Interventional Radiology and find that PICC lines have become a large burden for our department.  We don't have a PICC team so we take on the responsibility of placing them.  Apparently the department doesn't make a lot of money from them and would rather not tie up rooms to place them when they could be doing bigger and more lucrative procedures. So I began to think that perhaps there may be other hospitals that have the same issues.  Therefore I would like to start a PICC Line Insertion business as an outside contractor.  Not really sure where to begin.  I'm considering meeting with a lawyer and accountant.  I'll look into the malpractice.  Perhaps someone out there could guide me in the right direction so that I don't waste a lot of time.  For example, how would I charge?  I would like to charge the hospital directly rather than bill Medicare or insurance carriers.  But what does the market charge these days in New York?  Anyone who could shed some light on this, Thank you!!

I have investigated doing

I have investigated doing this, but never have actually done it. There are several companies doing lots of business with this service, however it is not easy to set up. You will need to have a contract template and I was going to use the one commonly used for contract dialysis services. This will be a 24/7 service, so be prepared to meet that demand. Also be prepared to provide free educational support for the nursing care required for the care, maintenance and troubleshooting of PICCs. Are you also prepared to purchase an ultrasound machine at a cost of ~$15,000? Plus purchase the catheters, kits, etc? You are correct that this service may be needed but I would take a long time to investigate and get my business set up correctly before I started doing it. I do not know the CMS rules for a PA to bill directly for services, but I know that NPs are the only nurses with those priviledges. Also be prepared for a lengthy turnaround time for payment from hospitals, could be as long as 6 to 9 months. So there is lots to think about.

There is a company in the Bay Area (in Pinole) called IV Assist, you could google them.

They established a business in 1996 and are servicing quite a few hospitals in the area, all nurses with a lot of experience. Check them out on line.

Companies out here in New York need to start reviewing their long island business insurance plan to make sure it covers flooding. Especially after they foot of rain that fell a few weeks ago over a foot and a lot of companies needed pumps and to get carpets replaced. Some damage to dry wall

I believe the hospital would

I believe the hospital would be wiser to create their own picc team of nurses.  The radiologists need to push administration for that to free up their fluoro suites and time.  Do a cost comparison and demonstrate how much money the hospital would save and the improvement in patient care because the picc team also supports education for the staff nurses in picc/ central line managament.

PICC placement services in NY

Are there any PICC services in New York?  Does NY allow these services to be owned and operated by a Physician Assistant if he was to have on board an MD acting as a supervising physician?  Is such an organization allowed to be owned by an RN in NY?
