phenergan IV

I am presently doing research on Phenergan IV for our facility. Totally, I am against giving IV Phenergan. As a PICC team in our facility, we are being paged to place peripherals or powerglides for patients that are receiving Phenergan IV. Even with ultrasound usage, I am finding it takes several sticks to place peripherals or powerglides on these patients. My question is "Are there any facilities that have ceased giving Phenergan IV completely?" I have heard in our state that some facilities are no longer giving Phenergan IV. I would appreciate responses to this.

I have been an expert on at

I have been an expert on at least 100 lawsuits involving IV promethazine. There are many hospitals that have removed this from their formulary. This was recommended by ISMP in 2006 however in 2009 FDA did not remove the IV route from the label.  Even if your team can place a line it must be thoroughly assessed before each dose. This includes flushing without resistance, a blood return and absence of all patient complaints at the site. This drug requires the same level of care as vesicant cancer chemotherapy drugs. Lynn

But it is a horrible drug

But it is a horrible drug when the nurses do not know how to safely give it. I just gave a 4 hour deposition this morning in a case involving promethazine. In my opinion, the IV route should be removed from the label!! PO, IM, etc is fine but not IV! Lynn

If I remember correctly, even

If I remember correctly, even the package insert states preferred route is IM or PO.  And I totally agree with Lynn.  It should NOT be given through a PIV!!

 Ann you are correct about

Ann you are correct about the preferred route being PO or deep IM. But the IV route is still on the label. FDA would not remove IV from the label. Lynn
