Are any locations with nurse IV/CVC Teams also placing IO's? We are looking at this possibility in emergency situations - would like to hear any thoughts, suggestions, etc from places that are already doing this. Thanks!
We trained the PAs and NPs to place IOs in emergency situations when rapid access was required and they worked very well. In the field they have been used for many years by the emergency medical teams in war and peacetime situations, so training nurses should be possible. However, I would recommend checking with the state in which you live regarding whether nurses are allowed to do so.
Many nurses have been trained to do IO. For at least a couple of years, one manufacturer has brought in human cadevers to a simulation lab at the INS annual conference to train on IO insertion. Lynn
