Based on the INS SOP's I cannot locate a standard addressing labeling of parenteral IV solutions (as previously noted in earlier versions) not compounded/labelled within the pharmacy. Previously it has been our practice to label all IV fluids hung with patient name, IV solution, volume, rate of infusion, time initiated, exp. date/time if indicated, and lot # if indicated. Recently I have been challenged with: since labelling is not specified in INS standards is it really necessary. What is the answer regarding Best Practice?
Thanks, Nancy
See Standard 17 page S24 and Standard 61, PC #E, page S86. This would apply to fluids compounded in the pharmacy and those taken from floor stock or some other non-pharmacy source. Lynn
