Informed Consent

Are there any institutions that use a script when consenting a Patient for PICC placement in order to have consistancy in what is said? I am trying to get my IV team all on the same page and was just wondering if this occurs elsewhere. I am the educator for this team.

 Thanks foar any responses.

informed consent

Hi Dave,

I do know of a facility that has developed written and video consent for PICC insertions.  The IV Team at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX has been doing this for several years now and I am sure they would be willing to discuss this with you and help you out.

I would suggest you contact Rebecca DelaCruz RN or Beth Natividad RN at 713-792-6804. Beth and Rebecca are the assistant nurse managers for the team.  I also have an email address for Rebecca, it is [email protected] so hopefully one of these contact routes will help you out.

I know they would be happy to talk to you as I used to be the CNS for the team and helped create these consents.  Just tell them that I referred you to them.

Let me know if you have any problems and I will see what I can do to help you make contact.

Hope this helps,

We use the PICC Consent

We use the PICC Consent itself - the PICC nurses goes over it with the patient and/or family, reading it to them if necessary.  We also have a patient teaching hand-out that talks about the risks/benefits/alternatives to PICCs which we give them.  Post your email address here and I can send you a copy of either or both.
