hohn/ij catheters

Hi everyone,

I am planning on attending the IJ insertion class at AVA in October.  I am interested, though, in who is currently placing these lines and where you all are located geographically?  I am in NC.  My facility is interested in getting rolling on this, however, is hesitant, without knowing who else is already up and running.  I would appreciate any and all input!  Thanks in advance!!

It is specific to state BON and hospital policy

You may want to check with your CVC manuafacturer rep to see if they can share with you a list of hospitals currently allowing RNs to place CVCs, it is becomeing more common than you may think.

I agree...

Chris, I have the BON's Position Statement printed out... I am good there.  Building policy for facility currently.  Just need to provide information of other facilities that are already practicing.  I think their fear is being out there as a trend starter.  I let them know we are not the first, but just to reassure them, I wanted to show some names of other facilities...

IJ Picc's

Hi Janette,

Good to see PICC teams moving in this direction. I have been inserting bedside IJ Picc's since Nov,2009. I'm located in NJ and I believe we are , currently, the only PICC team that does this in NJ. I find this disappointing as I would like to see more nurses get involved. I initiated the skill and went to IR to have the IR docs show me. Then they watched me insert three. Once I was done with that I began inserting on the floors. The policy for IJ insertion has been incorporated into the PICC insertion policy.

If you want to send your nurses up here to NJ , I would be glad to inservice them....better yet I love North Carolina..LOL

Regarding Class at AVA in October and placing CVC's

 Hi Janette,

I have been placing CVC's, going on two years now.  A multidisciplinary approach is the future of vascular access.  The class at AVA is exceptional and I can't recommend it highly enough.  Proper proctoring at your facility is crucial to your success as well.  If there is anything I can do do help/support your transition to this practice, please let me know.

IJ insertions

 Janette

I attended last falls CVC insertion class at AVA. It was excellent! I also attended a talk that Judy Thompson gave about her experience in developing policy and skill at her institution which helped me in doing the same for my hospital. Since, I have become competent and have started 49 IJ insertions and staff at my facility has thanked me many times for bringing this service into our institution. Not only does the nursing staff like it but physicians are very supportive .
