Stop Sign

I am working on implementing a Stop Sign process so other staff is aware there is a sterile procedure in progress. Staff is to leave a mask and hat outside the room in case someone needs access to the patient during this time. I was researching the origin of this recommendation but was unable to locate. Is anyone aware of where I can find this recommendation?

Stop Sign

Hi,

In a previous job I used Arrow (now Teleflex) insertion kits and they had a Stop Sign on the top of the kit that had an opening to hang on a door.  We use a different brand in this hospital so I haven't seen the Arrow sign in awhile.  That's where I got the idea, and I made my own colorful stop sign with some pictures and "do not enter" on the front which we hang on the curtain (SICU) or doors (other units).  It is inside a plastic sheath so we can wipe it down.  When it is there, it is very helpful to the staff.  I have previously left a cap and mask outside on the door handle when my colleague is on her way to assist, but didn't think about it for other nurses who need to enter.

I am not aware if there is another source for this info.  I have no affiliation with any product or company.

Check the AORN guidelines.

Check the AORN guidelines. Also here is a quote from Infection Control Today.

The sterile field may also be protected by creating a safe, clean environment within the operating room. Limiting the amount of foot traffic and activities in this area may help to reduce the number of bacteria that get kicked up in the atmosphere. To maintain a safer environment, the number of HCWs entering and exiting the OR should be limited; all personnel who enter the room should wear proper PPE; proper air handling and circulation should be established; and before the patient is brought into the OR, all surfaces that may have been contaminated during the last procedure should be cleaned and disinfected according to hospital policies and procedures

I have and use a great "STOP"

I have and use a great "STOP" sign....but HCW's (with Muli-advanced degrees) have forgotten the basic ability to read!  I also use a garbage can against the inside of the closed door just to slow them down....

Must have cap/mask to enter room.  If you park your procedure supply cart outside the room....park it in front of the door entrance.

Stop sign

We have stop signs in English and Spanish that are on yellow cords attached to magnets that stretch across the entrance and attach to the door frames.   It is hard to miss.

Many did not stop with the sign on the door, so we changed and have been using these for years.  They are attention getting and effective.
