Can someone please refer me to the standard referencing no blood sampling through a midline? Thank you.

INS Standards 2006 #37

The INS standard that addresses Midlines and blood drawing is #37, Under practice Criterial II, Item H--"Midline catheters should not be used routinely for blood drawing"

And this INS standard is

And this INS standard is based on the fact that there are no studies or reports of any kind about the success or failure of drawing blood samples from a mildine catheter. A midline tip location is still within a peripheral vein where the blood flow and vein diameter is much smaller than the SVC. There could be an additional risk for vein irriation with frequent blood draws, but we simply do not have any studies on this issue at all. Lynn

 We do use midline catheters

We do use midline catheters routinely for drawing blood and have not had any issues.
