Maximal Barrier for PICC dsg changes

Is anybody using maximal barrier (including full size drape) for routine PICC dressing changes? If so, would you please give evidence to support the use of it during dsg changes? I can find information regarding the use of maximal barrier for insertion, but not for dsg change.

Thank you

We have been doing dressing

We have been doing dressing changes this way for approx. 5 years now. We have trained assistants that do all of our PICC dressing changes. I would have to say that the drape is more like a 1/2 body drape, not full. They wear a hat, mask, sterile gown, sterile gloves and drape the pt.to perform a dressing change. I have not found any evidence to support this. It was started at the request of one of our intensivists. We have had extremely low infection rates since starting this process.

dressing change

We do not utilize maximum barrier precautions for dressing changes.  We do use a hair cover, face mask, sterile gloves and drape around the site with a small sterile drape.

I see no mention in the Infusion Nursing Standards of Practice for maximum barrier precautions in a dressing change.

We use a mask and sterile

We use a mask and sterile gloves with a small sterile dental drape under the arm.  I've never heard of maximum barriers for a simple dressing change.
