Nursing non-compliance to policy - reasons & percentages.

I attented the AVA convention in Savannah. One of the speakers stated a statistic that when nurses were non-compliant to policy (not sure if it was specific to scrubbing the hub), 60% of the time they "forgot" and 15% of the time the were truly uninformed of policy.

I guessed at those percentages...the conference was a few years ago. If anyone could point me to any articles that gives this info I would be most thankful. I am developing a new product that will help with this information. This is one statistic I have been unable to confirm.

Thanks for any help.

I do not recall the

I do not recall the presentation you are asking about, however the title of your message is a litte concerning to me. Policies should be considered non-negiotiable and nonmodifiable by any healthcare worker for a patient specific siutation. The only way to avoid adherence to something that is written as a policy is to get the appropriate committees to exam the issue and change the policy. But all healthcare workers at all levels must adhere to policy. This is one of the major components of a Joint Commission survey. This is also one of the reasons why every wish or desire must not be written as a policy. There are many aspects of clinical practice that must involve nursing and/or medical judgment and these issues should not be written as firm policies but rather as practice guidelines. I have also never seen the data you are looking for in the literature anywhere but I would like to know what this speaker was referring to. If you find it, please let us know. Thanks, Lynn

Well, the concept the

Well, the concept the presenter was trying to point out was that when nurses didn't comply to policy, they overwhelmingly knew better. So about a ratio of 3:1, they knew the policy but "forgot" or just chose not to...as opposed to a smaller percentage that actually were not aware. Im referring to policies such as hand washing, scrubbing the hub, etc... important policies, but we all know that not all nurses do it 100% of the time.

So...I have a simple product idea that will address both issues (forgetfullness & education issues). It will directly improve nusing compliance...infection prevention...reducing CRBSI's. I will keep looking for the research or i may do a new survey. Thanks for your input.

I guess I did not do a good

I guess I did not do a good job at explaining my thought on this. I find it absolutely appalling that so many nurses would not know a hospital policy. I know you said you did not recall the exact numbers, but a 3 to 1 ratio says to me that there is a huge system-wide problem with education, training, and individual performance. Sure wish you could find this data. Lynn
